Orla Baxter joined WPI as Pre-award Services Specialist in February 2016, was appointed Associate Director for Pre-Award in February 2017, and Director in January 2018. In addition to her role as Director of OSP, Orla continues to provide support for complex proposals with multiple partners and cost share requirements. Prior to coming to WPI, Orla worked at the National University of Ireland, Galway where she was Head of the Research Office having previously worked as the Manager for Administration and Strategic Initiatives in the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science. Orla has a BSc in Biotechnology and an MSc in Computing and Information Systems.
Pre Award Services
Tammy Ducharme joined the Office of Sponsored Programs at WPI in April 2007. She graduated from Worcester State University in 2003 with a BS in Business Administration. Before coming to WPI, Tammy worked in Operations Management for Protocol Global Solutions. As Sr. Assistant Director, Tammy coordinates the preparation and submission of faculty and staff proposals to external sponsors, and plays a key role in training both new OSP staff and members of the WPI research community. She also participates in the creation and negotiation of award and subaward documents, and oversees the updating and maintenance of OSP’s web site.
Lisa Masciarelli joined WPI as the Assistant Director, Pre-award, in November 2014. Lisa comes from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Graduate School of Nursing, where she provided support and coordination on school-wide grants and projects funded by NIH, HRSA, ACS and ONS. Previous to UMASS, she was Project Coordinator at Charles River Laboratories, where she submitted proposals to the FDA for toxicology, metabolism and pharmacokinetic studies. Lisa is responsible for proposal preparation, review and submission procedures for all proposals to be submitted electronically to external sponsors and determine that all proposals are completed in accordance with University policies and sponsor guidelines. Lisa completed the Research Administration Certificate Program at UMASS Medical School in 2011, and she has a BS in Business Administration.
Michelle Mulkern joined the Office of Sponsored Programs in February 2017. Prior to coming to WPI, Michelle worked at the University of Massachusetts Medical School as a Project Assistant, where she coordinated grant proposals for an orthopedic research group. She holds a B.S. in Policy Studies from WPI.
Post Award & Compliance Services
Gabe Johnson joined WPI as the Associate Director, Post-Award and Compliance, in September 2012. Gabe is responsible for the general post-award administration of sponsored programs at WPI. He is also charged with identifying and managing risk and compliance issues related to sponsored programs. Gabe develops and presents workshops on grant management at WPI, and he also serves as a member of WPI’s Institutional Review Board. Before coming to WPI, Gabe worked in the sponsored programs office at Clark University. He also previously worked as a risk manager for a global financial services firm. He is a graduate of Michigan State University and the Pratt Institute.
Kristin Keane joined the Office of Sponsored Programs in November 2013. Before coming to WPI, Kristin was the Executive Assistant with Spencer Technologies; a Retail Technologies company. During her time with Spencer she specialized in data & document management and reporting for the organization. She has background with many years in Operations Management. As Sponsored Programs Coordinator, Kristin coordinates and assists with the administration of sponsored program proposals and awards. She also provides administrative support for the office to serve faculty and staff members participating in externally funded projects, as well as reporting of proposal and award activity.
Chelsea D'Urso joined OSP as the Research Compliance and Subaward Specialist in February 2016. Chelsea is responsible for the negotiation and management of subawards, and she helps administer our research compliance activities. Before coming to WPI, Chelsea worked in MIT's Technology Licensing Office, managing compliance obligations for federally-funded intellectual property. She is a graduate of Boston University.
