Description

Why did you choose to study at WPI?

Psychology is a broad field, and I knew early on that I wanted to study it in a department where close relationships and mentorship were possible. Throughout my academic life, I’ve always been supported by mentors who not only cared about my academic success, but also about my growth as a person. That sense of community mattered deeply to me when choosing a college. WPI offered that kind of supportive, close-knit environment alongside strong research opportunities, which is why I chose to study here.

How are you involved with the WPI community?

I’m involved in a few different parts of the WPI community that have helped campus feel like home to me. Through the Student Alumni Society, I’ve really enjoyed helping run events, like Haunted Higgins House and Bridge Crossing, which are such fun ways to bring people together and build school spirit! I’m also on the women’s ice hockey team. I’ve played hockey since I was little so getting to keep playing while forming such close bonds with my teammates has been incredibly meaningful. I’m also involved in psychology research as the lab manager for the Social Psychology Inquiries Lab, under Professor Skorinko, and as a research assistant in the SEED Lab, under Dr. Angela C. Incollingo Rodriguez. I love that these roles let me stay closely connected to my department while being part of a larger campus community.

What’s your favorite thing about WPI?

One of my favorite things about WPI is the campus itself. I find the campus incredibly charming and welcoming. I love walking around at any time of year, especially in the spring when the trees by the fountain bloom.

Do you have a faculty or staff mentor?

Professor Michelle Ephraim has been a very meaningful presence during my time at WPI. I took one of her classes on a whim and quickly found that she has a way of making people genuinely excited about whatever subject is at hand. Even though I’m not doing a minor in English, I’ve had many thoughtful conversations with her, and I’ve always felt welcome to stop by during her office hours just to talk and catch up. Her openness and enthusiasm have made a lasting impression on how I approach learning and my relationships within the WPI community. I’ve learned how important it is to build close connections not only with peers, but also with faculty and mentors.

How has WPI’s project-based learning influenced your education?

WPI’s emphasis on project-based learning has been one of the most meaningful parts of my education. Working in groups here goes far beyond simply producing good work or meeting deadlines. Through participating in these projects, I’ve learned how important it is to truly connect with the people you’re working with, to communicate openly, to support one another, and to want to see everyone succeed. This is as important as the final product! Projects don’t always go perfectly, and people sometimes drop the ball, but WPI allows space for those moments to become learning experiences rather than failures. Being encouraged to grow together, both academically and personally, is something I will carry with me long after my time at WPI.
