Information Technology Services (ITS) is excited to announce expanded high performance computing capabilities as WPI joins the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) this summer!
MGHPCC is a computing facility and consortium developed to enable member institutions to share building infrastructure (including space, power, and cooling) and collaborate on research. Over the last few years, growth in WPI’s research and AI initiatives has consumed more and more GPU and CPU capacity, limiting our ability to expand.
MGHPCC’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment enables future resource expansion at a cost-effective level. A LEED Platinum Certified university research data center, located in Holyoke, Mass., MGHPCC advances WPI’s green initiative. The facility maximizes energy efficiency while minimizing negative environmental impacts. By using MGHPCC, WPI will save on campus electricity costs and spend less on expanding campus high performance computing infrastructure.
Additionally, WPI will gain the opportunity to collaborate with MGHPCC founding members: Harvard, Yale, Northeastern, BU, MIT and the University of Massachusetts system, as well as the University of Rhode Island.
ITS looks forward to the summer implementation, which has been endorsed by the WPI AI Technology Task Force. There will be no change in how high performance computing is accessed. ITS will soon share specific details when the summer move from on-campus to MGHPCC is scheduled. If you have questions about this development in high performance computing, we encourage you to contact ARCHelp@WPI.edu.
