George C. Gordon LibraryThe light-painting over the entrance of the Gordon Library welcomes students and visitors to the "definition of possible" - a world of new ideas, new friendships, new creations.
Step through our front doors and you'll see friendly staff, comfortable seating and windows that look out on Worcester's trees and hills. But students have asked for more modern library lighting, and we are delighted to report that this summer we made huge progress on a goal that we've shared for years!
Gordon Library’s distinctive overhead lighting system was a cutting-edge design when the library opened its doors in 1968. But as each decade passed, the need for a modern lighting system became more compelling. Replacing the library’s legacy lights with sustainable lighting has been a much-desired goal of WPI Facilities’ energy savings plans.
This summer we made rapid progress toward this goal, replacing all lighting on the library’s popular upper (3rd) floor. New lighting includes sustainable recessed lights and features hanging light fixtures as well as new track lighting for gallery walls.
Please stop by, step up the stairs and enjoy the beautiful new light!
