On June 4 in St. Louis, MO, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) recognized WPI Provost Wole Soboyejo with the 2023 Ralph Coats Roe Medal during its annual meeting where he delivered a lecture, “Next Frontiers for Functional Materials for Health, Energy, and the Environment.”

Each year since 1972, the Ralph Coats Roe Medal has recognized outstanding contributions toward a better public understanding and appreciation of an engineer’s worth to contemporary society.

Soboyejo, a Fellow of the ASME since 2002, was honored “for the development of fracture mechanics approaches to the prediction of fatigue and fracture in advanced structural alloys and composites, and for outstanding contributions to biomaterials and bio-inspired structures, materials for water filtration, and sustainable housing.”

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers is an 90,000-member not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society.
