WPI Weekly Athletic Update (Week of 01/21 - 01/27)

Ethan Harrell erupted for a career-high 26 points and Men’s Basketball doled out 19 assists on 27 baskets as the Engineers defeated Springfield 79-66 in NEWMAC matchup played in Harrington Auditorium on Wednesday evening.  WPI then won its sixth straight on Saturday, besting Wheaton 71-58. Colin McNamara led the way with 16 points and Jake Needleman and Harrell both added 12 points.

Zach Denbow won as an individual and as part of a relay as Men's Swimming & Diving bested crosstown foe Clark, 116-94, Wednesday night in the Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers extended their single-season program record to 13 wins and pushed head coach Paul Bennett past the 200 men's and women's dual meet win milestone. The men won its 14th meet Saturday at Hartwick. Women's Swimming & Diving’s 400-yard freestyle relay comprised of Audrey BernerKimmy HazeltineCarol Wang and Katherine Pawlak closed out a 167-127 triumph over host Hartwick Saturday afternoon in the Sally Griffiths Herbert '88 Aquatic Center.  With the win, the team sets the program record for single-season dual meet victories with 11. The previous best was 10 set by the 2015-16 squad.

The foursome of Tyler MarshChase LindDan Wensley and Nick Day combined to win eight bouts on the day as WPI split two matches Saturday afternoon in a home super quad in the Sports & Recreation Center.  The Crimson and Gray knocked over New England Wrestling Association foe Southern Maine 25-20 in their opener before dropping a 27-14 decision to Brockport in the nightcap.

Men's Track & Field’s Oliver Thomas set a meet record at the Tufts Branwen Smith-King Invitational and Antoine Harris produced a Division III top-20 time at the non-scoring BU John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday.  Thomas initially bested the meet record with an 8.42 in the 60-meter hurdle prelims and was one of two to beat the standard in the final with an 8.23.  Women's Track & Field’s Carley Dykstra shined at Tufts on Saturday while Sydney Packard made her 2019 debut in the 800-meter run at the non-scoring BU John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday. Dykstra won the pole vault with a height of 11-9.75, which is 14th on the NCAA Division III performance list while Packard clocked the No. 3 time in the country with a 2:12.56.

Men’s Basketball and Swimming and Diving are home this week.  Men’s Basketball welcomes crosstown rival Clark to Harrington Auditorium on Wednesday at 7pm while Swimming and Diving is home for the last time in the regular season, hosting the Tech Sprints on Saturday morning and late afternoon in the Sports & Recreation Center.  Women’s Basketball has a pair of road contests, heading to Coast Guard on Wednesday and Babson on Saturday.  Speaking of Coast Guard, both Men’s Basketball and Wrestling are in New London on Saturday with Men’s Basketball facing the host Bears and Wrestling facing Bridgewater State and NYU.  Finally, Track and Field is back at Tufts for the second Saturday in a row, taking part in the Cupid Challenge.

Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week

Chase Lind - Wrestling - Junior - Fairfield, CT

Chase Lind from the wrestling team has been tabbed as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 27th. One of four double winners on Saturday, Lind was trailing after two periods at 174 pounds before a quick strike and pin at 5:09 gave WPI the 14-11 advantage against Southern Maine. He later used an escape in the final second of his bout opposite Brockport to post a major decision (13-5) for the Engineers. The junior is tied for second on the team with 18 victories, including nine pins, four major decisions and four decisions.

Women’s Student-Athlete of the Week

Sydney Packard - Track & Field - Junior - Georgetown, MA

Sydney Packard of the track & field team has been named as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 27th. Packard made her 2019 800-meter run debut a successful one as the junior clocked the No. 3 time in the country with a 2:12.56. Bates senior Ayden Eickhoff (Corvallis, MT), who was one spot behind Packard at last year's NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, led the DIII contingent with a second-ranked 2:11.97. The race also produced the fourth, fifth and sixth ranked times on the DIII leaderboard.
