September 19, 2007

The WPI Ballroom Dance Team will host its first large-scale Intercollegiate Social Dance featuring ballroom dancing at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, in WPI's Harrington Auditorium. More than 150 students from colleges and universities across New England will take part in the event. Tickets, at $7, will be available for purchase at the door.

What

The WPI Ballroom Dance Team is hosting its first large-scale Intercollegiate Social Dance featuring ballroom dancing.

Who

More than 150 students from WPI, Northeastern University, Rhode Island College, University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Lowell, Clark University, College of the Holy Cross, and other New England-based colleges and universities.

Why

Ballroom dancing has an enormous following. Since the advent of national television talent shows like "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance," people of all ages and backgrounds are seeing what is so special about ballroom dancing. For many college students, this form of dance provides a creative outlet, one that allows them to learn the technical aspects of body positioning and movement. WPI's own Ballroom Dance Team boasts recent wins at high-profile competitions such as the MIT Open Competition earlier this year in Cambridge, Mass.

When

7 p.m. (Doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Tickets will be available at the door ($7 general and $3 a pair for heel taps if needed). The dress code is nice – no jeans or sneakers. Dancers should wear shoes that won't scratch the floor. Refreshments will be served.
