Delayed Opening Until Noon, Tuesday, November 13th

UPDATE
November 13, 2012

As announced earlier this morning, WPI classes were cancelled this morning, Tuesday, November 13, 2012. Classes will resume at noon today.

Water service was recently restored at WPI, but Facilities personnel are still working on getting all buildings operational. Many toilet rooms are still not in service, and will be brought on line over the course of the day. Porta-potties are available for use in four locations: on the Quad in front of Daniels; in Ellsworth parking lot; in Dean St. parking lot; and Gateway North parking lot.

Water pressure will vary from building to building over the course of the day, which may impact lab experiments and equipment.

Dining Services has made the following alterations to their facility schedule for today:

  • Morgan Dining Commons: Will be open normal hours with some menu modifications. We will be using disposable products for meal service.
  • Campus Center: Will open at noon and be open through normal operating hours with menu modifications.
  • Library CafĂ©: Will open at noon and be open through normal operating hours but will not offer any coffee based menu options.
  • Dunkin Donuts: Will open at noon and be open through normal operating hours but will not offer any coffee based menu options.
  • Higgins House Dining: Will be closed today
  • Goats Head Restaurant: Will operate with normal operating hours and will have menu modifications and disposable products for meal service
  • Outtakes Convenience Store: Will be open normal operating hours but will not offer any coffee based menu options.

The city advises to avoid drinking from the tap and drinking fountains until further notice.

Thank you for your cooperation during this city-wide water outage.

ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Water service has not yet been restored at WPI, so our opening is delayed until 12 noon; all morning classes are cancelled today.

Non-essential personnel should remain at home until noon unless otherwise instructed. Essential Personnel are required to report to work at their normal starting time, unless directed otherwise by their supervisor.

The city has just completed the repair of the broken pipe, however it will take at least 4-6 hours to refill the pipes throughout the city and re-establish enough water pressure for the plumbing systems to be fully restored. As the water service comes available, our facilities staff will be concentrating on restrooms to clear each fixture of blockages to avoid overflows and flooding and other problems. This will be an involved process and will take time to get to every area on campus and make adjustments.

Please do not flush any toilets until they have been cleared by the Facilities staff. We are expecting porta-potties to be delivered shortly to the Quad along Daniels Hall, to Dean Street Lot behind Founders Hall, and to the Einhorn Lot behind the Ellsworth Apartments. Please use the porta-potties while our staff is focused on the restrooms; this will help us turn over the restrooms sooner and will avoid overflows.

When water service has been restored, please continue to avoid drinking from the tap and drinking fountains till further notice.

A further update is anticipated around 10am this morning.
