Smart cities are cities that use advanced technology and data analytics to improve the quality of life of their citizens, enhance sustainability, and streamline urban services. The goal of a smart city is to use technology to create a more efficient, sustainable, and livable city.

Some common features of smart cities include:

Intelligent transportation systems that use real-time data to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion.

Smart buildings that use sensors and automation to manage energy usage, heating and cooling, and security.

Advanced public services such as smart waste management, water management, and emergency response systems.

Citizen engagement platforms that enable residents to provide feedback and participate in decision-making processes.

Use of big data analytics to gather insights on city operations, and inform policy-making.

Smart cities aim to improve the quality of life for residents, promote economic development, and enhance sustainability. However, there are also concerns around data privacy, cybersecurity, and equity that need to be addressed as cities become increasingly reliant on technology. Smart cities are one area of focus for WPI's Smart World research groups. These multi-disciplinary teams use their expertise to assess the opportunities and challenges of the changing ways people live and work. Their goal is to develop integrated solutions to pressing problems. WPI experts on smart cities are available to discuss their research and the latest developments in this arena.
