Expert Bio

As a professor of mathematical sciences and widely published researcher, Bogdan Vernescu areas of expertise include composite materials, porous media, smart materials, applied mathematics and mathematical modeling. As Vice President and Vice Provost for Research and Innovation, Vernescu is responsible for the overall operations and non-financial services that support the research enterprise at WPI. Vernescu provides the vision and leadership to enhance faculty research efforts and increase WPI’s externally sponsored funding.

Two WPI researchers win $1.26 million in NSF awards for cybersecurity, carbon-conversion research

The Worcester Guardian reported on the awarding of National Science Foundation CAREER Awards to Fatemeh Ganji, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Fanglin Che, associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Ganji's research will focus on cybersecurity to protect privacy on AI devices. Che's work will focus on using AI and data-driven simulation to optimize catalytic reactions during carbon dioxide capture and electrochemical conversion.

Worcester Business Journal reported on how the university's NASA-funded research carries on the legacy of alum Robert Goddard, the Father of Modern Rocketry. The article highlights WPI as the largest recipient of NASA research funding of any university in Central Massachusetts in fiscal year 2025 and how this research, often done in coordination with local companies, supports economic growth and workforce development in the state.
