WPI will launch a new project center in Syros in B’24.  Syros is a Greek island located in the Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean Sea, about 80 miles south-east of Athens.  In the 19th century it was the most important port in all of Greece and the center of the country’s shipping industry.  Ermoupoli, the administrative capital of the 220 islands that make up the Cyclades, reflects this prosperous past with its large neoclassical mansions, elegant theaters, well-designed public spaces, museums, and operating shipyards.  Ermoupolis is also the main campus of the University of the Aegean, and WPI students will find a very vibrant student life on the island.  Beyond Ermoupoli the island has picturesque villages, small farms that produce vegetable, fruits and olives, and miles of hiking trails and protected natural areas.  The island is about 85 square kilometers and has a population of around 21,000. It takes about two and half hours by ferry from Athens to reach Syros, and there are regularly scheduled flights from Athens to Syros.

Projects will focus on:

  • Expanding agrotourism opportunities.
  • Increasing the reach of the city’s “Future Lab”, a community makerspace in a former tannery.
  • Citizen science projects related to biodiversity of natural areas.
  • Working with local museums on interactive system designs
