WPI Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) students brought their content knowledge and passion for STEM to high school students participating in Upward Bound at Clark University through their Noyce Internships. This marks the second summer that Teacher Prep students have served as STEM instructors for Upward Bound, helping meet the program's growing need for STEM-focused summer learning opportunities.
Over the course of four weeks, the WPI Teacher Prep students designed and delivered engaging, interactive STEM lessons. For example, Cole Solomon ('28) taught Intro to Engineering where rising sophomores learned about Rube Goldberg machines. Cole developed the curriculum, lesson plans, and learning objectives for the course, aligning them with Massachusetts state standards. Chen-Chen MacVicar-Ceckle ('29) taught a STEM course focused on robotics for rising juniors. As part of the curriculum, students used XRP Robots from WPI's Robotics Resource Center. Ryan Shi ('29) taught a physics course on waves to rising seniors. The Teacher Prep students were mentored in lesson planning and instruction by TJ Noviello.

Throughout the summer, the three TPP students practiced co-teaching, supported one another, and learned from each other's teaching styles. They also built meaningful relationships with Upward Bound scholars both inside and outside the classroom.
In addition to teaching, the TPP students connected with the Scholars through field trips and special events. One of the special events was Upward Bound's final celebration, known as "Spree Day," where the Upward Bound scholars showcased their talents. Chen-Chen's students presented their XRP robots programmed to dance to music in front of a roaring crowd. In addition, TPP students had opportunities to connect with families during program events, engaging in conversations and introducing themselves to parents and guardians.
Partnerships with local youth-serving organizations continue throughout the school year, with WPI Teacher Prep students serving as Noyce Internship tutors at community partner sites such as ACE, LEI, and Upward Bound. In addition, Teacher Prep students gain valuable experience leading hands-on STEM activities in out-of-school programs at community-based organizations. These experiences help prepare them for their upcoming student teaching practicum placements in local schools.
