WPI Athletics Weekly Update (Week of 10/15/18 - 10/21/18)

Department(s):

Sports & Recreation

A pair of outstanding performances for Rowing at the Head of the Charles and Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball all enter the final week of their regular seasons having already clinched NEWMAC Tournament berths.  All four teams are in the hunt to host home games in their respective NEWMAC Tournaments beginning Tuesday, October 30th.

Women's rowing's varsity eight earned its first-ever medal with a third-place finish Sunday at the historic Head of The Charles Regatta. The varsity eight (18:42.328) only trailed defending national champion Bates (18:18.054) and Williams (18:38.890). The Engineers also bested Ithaca, Smith, Wesleyan and Tufts who were fourth through seventh. NEWMAC foe Wellesley took 10th and Coast Guard was 12th. Mercyhurst interrupted the Division III parade with an eighth-place showing.

Men's Rowing excelled Sunday in brutal rowing conditions at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. The varsity eight finished in ninth place in the Collegiate Eights while the second varsity eight was 25th overall. The varsity eight caught a crab but still found themselves in ninth place with a time of 16:31.400.  The Engineers were less two seconds out of sixth place behind Notre Dame (6th - 16:29.626), Boston College (7th - 16:29.866) and St. Joseph’s PA (8th - 16:31.090).  Michigan won the 35-boat race in a time of 15:58.108.

Azita Bakhtyari notched a double-double while two more Engineers narrowly missed one of their own as Volleyball downed host Wheaton, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-15) in a NEWMAC matchup Tuesday night in Emerson Gymnasium.  The Crimson and Gray got a match-high 13 kills from Sarah Kwatinetz, who ended the night with a .423 attacking percentage. WPI is now 20-6 on the season and was ranked ninth in the initial NCAA Division III New England rankings.

Speaking of NCAA rankings, Field Hockey debuted at third in the first New England East rankings released this week.  WPI is now 10-4 overall and 4-3 in NEWMAC play.

Sofia Orrico's header in the 24th minute proved to be the offensive difference as Women’s Soccer edged Wheaton, 1-0, in a NEWMAC match Tuesday night in Alumni Stadium.  Gabriela Hoops made five stops for the Engineers Saturday in a scoreless double overtime road draw at Wellesley.  WPI is 11-4-1 on the season and tied with Emerson and Coast Guard for third in the NEWMAC with 16 points.

In a rematch of the 2017 NEWMAC Championship contest, Men's Soccer battled to a scoreless tie through 110 minutes of play against Springfield at Brock-Affleck Field on Saturday afternoon.  The last three matchups between WPI and Springfield have ended in scoreless ties over 110 minutes of play, as the last goal between the two sides was in 2016, a span of 341 minutes and 25 seconds of play.  The Engineer defense excelled all week as WPI shutout Elmira 4-0 on Tuesday and blanked Mitchell on Sunday 2-0.

We are very excited for Homecoming and have a busy week of competition ahead of us.  Tuesday features three home contests with Women’s Soccer squaring off with MIT at 4pm, Volleyball entertaining Clark at 7pm and Field Hockey tangling with Fitchburg State at 7pm.  Saturday will be a busy day in Alumni Stadium as Men’s Soccer hosts Clark at 10am, Football meets MIT at 1pm and Women’s Soccer faces Springfield at 5pm while Men’s and Women’s Rowing will hold its Alumni Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond.  Swimming and Diving will make its season debut Friday and Saturday, hosting the annual Worcester City Meet in the Sports and Recreation Center.  Also this weekend the fall championship season begins with Cross Country competing in the NEWMAC Championships Saturday at Smith.
