Professor Nephew’s work is broadly focused on identifying and studying neurobehavioral mechanisms of mental illness and developing effective interventions. Research areas include mindfulness-based stress reduction to develop machine learning-based early predictors of severe depression and suicidality; postpartum depression/anxiety, and the impact of social stress, alcohol, and air pollution on behavior, immune factors, neural connectivity, neuroendocrinology, and related epigenetic changes.

His research also leverages machine learning to detect anatomical changes in the brain, with the goal of accurately predicting Alzheimer's disease, to allow for earlier diagnosis. He is also part of a research team working to identify predictors to determine who responds well to mindfulness interventions for chronic low back pain.

New AI tools by researchers aim to catch Alzheimer’s in quiet stages

How can artificial intelligence help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease? WPI researchers have used a form of AI to analyze anatomical changes in the brain and predict Alzheimer’s with nearly 93% accuracy.  Benjamin Nephew, assistant research professor in the Department of Biology & Biotechnology, spoke with The Boston Globe about the use of machine learning in the research.

Researchers say AI can predict Alzheimer’s disease with close to 93 percent accuracy

Several media outlets reported on research, led by Benjamin Nephew, assistant research professor in the Department of Biology and Biotechnology, published in the journal Neuroscience. The research team used a form of artificial intelligence to analyze anatomical changes in the brain and predict Alzheimer’s disease with nearly 93% accuracy.
