Loris Fichera is an expert in medical robotics and computer science. His work focuses on developing technologies that enhance surgical precision and expand treatment options for patients. His work centers on developing innovative tools, such as robot-assisted laser surgery systems and steerable devices, which enable minimally invasive procedures and improve outcomes in areas like larynx and ear surgery. He collaborates closely with clinicians to translate engineering advances into real-world medical applications. Fichera, a 2026-2027 fellow of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, can speak on topics such as surgical robotics, AI and machine learning in medicine, minimally invasive procedures, and the future of technology-driven healthcare innovation.

Flexible optical fiber offers improved larynx surgeries

Several media outlets reported on research led by Loris Fichera, associate professor in the Department of Robotics Engineering. The research team is working to expand outpatient laser treatment options for patients with growths in the larynx. The project has developed a flexible optical fiber that can be threaded through a medical endoscope and steered into the larynx to destroy hard-to-reach tumors on the vocal folds,
