WHAT

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) will hold a dedication for its new Sports and Recreation Center. A ribbon cutting will be followed by tours of the new facility, robotics demonstrations in the robotics pit area, and dance demonstrations.

WHO

On hand to speak will be WPI President and CEO Dennis D. Berkey, Board of Trustees Chairman Steve Rubin, and WPI Athletic Director Dana Harmon.

WHY

WPI's Sports and Recreation Center is one of the finest higher education athletic facilities in the Northeast and one of the "greenest" sports centers in the nation. The 145,000-square-foot, LEED-certified center also provides WPI with ample space for hosting regional and national robotics competitions and other non-sporting events. WPI students studying civil and mechanical engineering used the building as the basis of research projects, working with the contractor to enhance 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) software and creating a system that integrates all design and construction data. Students are now working with the builders, IBM, and AutoCad, a manufacturer of 3D modeling software, to evolve the system to make maintenance operations more efficient now that construction is complete.
