Murphy’s Interception Return Among GEICO Play of the Year Finalists
November 06, 2014

The electrifying 95-yard interception return by WPI defensive back Sean Murphy ’16 for a touchdown against Curry is a finalist for GEICO Play of the Year. The winner, determined by fan voting on Facebook at Facebook.com/BestOfCollegeFootball, will be announced on GEICO Best of College Football 2014 on CBS Nov. 28 at 1:30 p.m.

Murphy’s interception and touchdown occurred in the fourth quarter of WPI’s season opening 29-7 victory over host Curry on Sept. 5. The junior, who was All-Liberty League last year as both a defensive back and a kick returner, made the play with the Colonels trailing by just one score and driving deep inside Engineers territory. It was the first of three touchdowns scored by Murphy this season as he picked up a botched reverse attempt on the opening kickoff the following weekend against Worcester State and took it 75 yards for a score. He also had a 48-yard pick-six against Union (watch) and was given the Robert Pritchard Award for Most Outstanding Back at Homecoming last month.

WPI treks to University of Rochester for a noon Liberty League tilt on Saturday.
