Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) junior Ernie Mello rushed for a career-best 129 yards, including a touchdown, to pace visiting WPI to a 24-10 triumph over rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the Liberty League opener for both teams Saturday, Sept. 25. With the victory, the Engineers (3-1) win their third-straight contest this season and reclaim the much sought-after Transit Trophy for the first time since 1996.

Symbolic of the longstanding football rivalry between the two schools, Saturday’s dramatic win has been cause for celebration at WPI—celebration of the football team and of Head Coach Chris Robertson, who began his WPI career just this season.

The Transit Trophy was first awarded in 1980, although the rivalry between WPI and RPI has been ongoing since 1894.
