Description

Why did you choose to study at WPI?

I came to WPI as a very small child for a kid's robotics competition. I immediately felt at home and made the decision to go there for college on the spot. I'm pleased to report it has worked out quite well for me.

How are you involved with the WPI community?

I participate in all the theatrical clubs on campus (VOX, Masque, and academic theatre) as well as Lens and Lights. I have always felt at home in the backstage of a theatre, and I was quite happy to jump in. One of my proudest achievements is that I’ve been a part of every show since I got here, save for one (I was busy directing another one at the time). My favorite part of these clubs is the people because all my very favorite storytellers and collaborators are found within them. I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to participate all this time.

What’s your favorite thing about WPI?

My very favorite thing about this school, hands down, is the people. I am so blessed to know the people I’ve met here! I love how creative, funny, kind, and close-knit our community is. My friends will inevitably give me grief over saying so, but I'm one to wear my heart on my sleeve. I am so lucky to know the folks on this campus.

Do you have a faculty or staff mentor?

My mentors in the WPI Theatre program are Professors Laura Eckelman, Katie Hamilton, Sarah Lucie, and Kate Moncrief (ordered by last name; I'm not choosing favorites!) who have undoubtedly changed my life. Their skills in teaching and their empathy for students have allowed me to find a home in a field I would like to pursue for the rest of my life. They are the best mentors by allowing me to grow in my skills and confidence.

What was a memorable experience you’ve had with theatre?

I was a stage management intern at Peterborough Players in New Hampshire this past summer. I was lucky to spend time in the rehearsal room and backstage with a variety of theatrical professionals across five different shows. I got to see what they do and how they do it to make a production happen. It was a wonderful environment for growth and I learned so much about the field I want to go into forever. It was also my first experience being backstage at a professional theatre, which was just as magical as I'd always hoped it would be. I am incredibly thankful for my mentors who gave me the chance to be a part of such a wonderful program.

How has WPI’s project-based learning influenced your education?

Project-based learning has allowed me to make close connections with my professors and peers, as well as grow in hands-on learning environments. As someone who had little practical engineering experience before WPI, I’ve learned far more than I ever expected by actually being in the room and doing things. This is due to my professors and friends who have taken the time to help me find robust projects that catch my interests and play to my strengths. I have especially grown as a project manager, which is very important in theatre.

"Bringing WPI’s emphasis on problem-solving and project-based learning into a professional setting [at the Peterborough Players], Abbey dove in with enthusiasm, energy, and curiosity. The staff and guest artists were impressed by Abbey’s positivity and initiative as they learned about all aspects of the position and contributed to the success of the five-show season."
