Frontiers Admission Process

Admission to WPI’s Frontiers program is determined on a rolling basis. Rolling admissions is a process in which applications are reviewed as they are received rather than after a set deadline. Since we use rolling admissions, our courses will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Many programs have limited space available, so we encourage you to complete your application as soon as you can. Our most popular major and minor courses will be full well ahead of our published application deadline.

How to Apply

Students who are interested in attending WPI's Frontiers program will need to apply via our online application portal and submit supporting documents. An application is not considered complete and will not be reviewed until the following items are received:

  • A complete application form consisting of personal identifying information, a list of activities/hobbies/interests, and answers to two short response questions.
    • The short response questions are as follows:
      • Question 1: Please share why you want to attend a WPI summer program.
      • Question 2: Please answer one of the following three questions:
        • Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and new understanding of yourself or others.
        • The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
        • Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lost all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
  • A copy of a transcript that includes all courses taken in high school and grades received to date. Transcripts can be self-submitted or sent directly from your school.
  • TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English proficiency test scores (international applicants).
  • A letter of recommendation and SAT/ACT test scores are not required for Frontiers.

Requesting Tuition Assistance

Students who apply to Frontiers are eligible for up to 50% tuition assistance and will be considered if the following are all true:

  • Your Frontiers application is submitted prior to March 15, 2026.
  • The Tuition Assistance section is complete and submitted at the time of application.
  • Your combined family income is less the $120,ooo per year.

Even if all the above points are true, tuition assistance is not guaranteed. The Pre-Collegiate Outreach office operates independently of WPI's Office of Financial Aid and has limited funds available to support students. Available funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Any award of tuition assistance will be sent along with the Frontiers acceptance letter/email. If a student is awarded tuition assistance and does not deposit within one month, their award may be forfeited.

Helpful Hints

We encourage you to consider the following when applying to Frontiers:

  • Create a log-in for the WPI portal that you will remember. If you are admitted and opt to attend Frontiers, you will need to regularly access this portal through July.
  • Write your short responses in a word document and copy them into the application before submission to avoid getting "timed out" of the portal.
  • Bold or italicize titles and important information (leadership roles, etc) on your activity list.
  • Spell check your name, address, school, etc... before submitting your application.
