WPI Athletics Weekly Update (Week of 10/29/18 - 11/4/18)
Department(s):
Sports & RecreationAs we head into perhaps the final week of Fall teams in action, Football, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball have combined for a 61-26-5 overall record, good enough for a .690 winning percentage. Throw in a pair of second place finishes at the NEWMAC Cross Country Championships, it was a pretty successful fall!
Molly Sykes posted the quickest times in a pair of events to help Women’s Swimming and Diving collect wins over Simmons (165-135), Brandeis (197-96), Smith (241-59) and Babson (241-48) in the first dual meets of the season Friday night in the Sports & Recreation Center. Sykes was the first of three Engineers to touch the wall in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:09.72. Shelvey Swett and Emma Edwardson were .04 seconds apart in second (1:11.88) and third (1:11.92). Later in the meet, Sykes had the fastest 400-yard IM performance with a 4:42.14. Sydney Seo, Sykes, Alice Morgan and Katherine Pawlak opened the night with a 1:53.02 in the 200-yard medley relay.
Jack Bauer won a pair of individual events as Men’s Swimming and Diving swept Brandeis, 163-116, and Babson, 162-116, by near identical scores in the first set of dual meets of the season Friday night in the Sports & Recreation Center. Bauer, who along with Dave Chen, Jackson Perry and Craig Barrett began the event with a winning 200-yard medley relay time of 1:34.05, secured the 50-yard freestyle (22.04) and 100-yard backstroke (51.68). Chen added a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.40) while Perry was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.18) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (51.53). Barrett touched the wall second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.17).
Cross Country heads to Bowdoin this Saturday for the NCAA Division III New England Championships while Football wraps up its 2018 season with a noon home game against Norwich. A pair of winter teams make their debut this week as Women’s Basketball hosts the Worcester City Tournament Friday (5:30pm vs. Becker) and Saturday (5pm/7pm vs. Clark/Worcester State) and Wrestling competes Saturday in the Ursinus Fall Brawl. Also Saturday, Swimming and Diving hosts a double-dual meet with Coast Guard and Southern Connecticut at noon in the Sports & Recreation Center.
