WPI Weekly Athletic Update (Week of 11/19 - 11/25)

184-pounder Dan Wensley defeated the fourth-ranked wrestler in the nation and Pete Nash and Ronan Ball both registered first period pins as Wrestling went on the road to defeat Western New England 30-12 in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) dual meet on Tuesday evening.  Wensley, ranked third in New England and ninth nationally, bested the second-ranked grappler in New England at 184 pounds by using the riding time point to win 3-2. With the victory WPI is now 3-1 on the season.  

Spencer Vinson posted a double-double, including a new career-high in rebounds, and Alyssa Paul tied her career-high in points as Women’s Basketball defeated visiting Nichols, 54-25, Tuesday night in Harrington Auditorium.  Vinson scored 11 and pulled down 10 rebounds while Paul netted a game-best 12 points on the night. Maddie Blake added a career-bests of 11 rebounds and four assists in the victory.   Alana Keating and McKenna Finken chipped in with eight points apiece.

Dakota Wheeler and Ethan Harrell combined for 31 points off the bench in the first half of a 90-71 Men's Basketball triumph over city rival Worcester State Tuesday evening in Harrington Auditorium.  Reid Walker notched a double-double of 10 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Garrett Stephenson added 15 points, followed by Jake Needleman with 13, and Colin McNamara with 10. McNamara paced everyone with six assists and three steals. Jake Wisniewski stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, four assists, two rebounds, a block and a steal.



WPI seniors Larry CafaroSteffany HalfreyMark Landergan and Sierra 'Knox' Palmer have been named to their respective NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship teams. Juniors Luke Lindholm and Colleen Mullins, as well as, sophomore Jackie Cardin were also recognized. Cafaro represented the football team while Halfrey and Landergan were the cross country honorees, and Palmer was the women's soccer selection. Lindholm was the men's soccer pick and Mullins claimed the volleyball nod. Cardin took home the field hockey citation.

Riley Doherty and Rufus Adams have been named to the Google Cloud Academic Men's Soccer All-District I team, as voted upon by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.  The duo is now under consideration for Academic All-America accolades.

Azita Bakhtyari has been named to the Google Cloud Women's Volleyball Academic All-District I team for the third consecutive year, as voted upon by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The setter, who secured the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-America in 28 years in 2017, now moves on to the national ballot for a chance to earn back-to-back honors.

For the second consecutive year, offensive lineman Nick Day has been selected as a member of the Google Cloud Football Academic All-District I team, as voted upon by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He is joined this year by Erik FyrerSpencer HerringtonNick Ostrowski and Lou Duh.  All five advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. WPI and MIT shared the lead with five each to go with three from Springfield for a NEWMAC total of 13.

Swimming and Diving will host the sixth annual Gompei Invitational with day and evening sessions on Friday November 30th, Saturday, December 1st and Sunday December 2nd.  Also home on Saturday is Women Basketball, who hosts Emerson at 2pm.  Men’s Basketball has a pair of road contests this week, traveling to Tufts on Tuesday at 7pm and heading to Fitchburg State at noon while Wrestling ventures to Rochester for the RIT Invitational on Saturday.

Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week

Dan Wensley - Wrestling - Senior - Wakefield, MA

Dan Wensley from the wrestling team has been selected as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 25th. Wensley, who entered the week third in New England and ninth in the nation at 184, defeated the fourth-ranked wrestler in the country by capitalizing on the riding time point to win 3-2 as the No. 12 Engineers rallied to defeat Western New England on Tuesday.  The junior is now 8-1 on the season.

Women’s Student-Athlete of the Week

Spencer Vinson - Basketball - Junior- Los Angeles, CA

Spencer Vinson of the basketball team has been honored as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 25th. Vinson came off the bench to score 11 points and haul in a career-high 10 rebounds in Tuesday’s home win over Nichols.  The junior currently leads the 4-1 Crimson and Gray in scoring (11.8 ppg), rebounding (8.8 rpg) and blocks (4) and is second in steals (5).
