Professor Liu’s research focuses on built and urban environment, occupant-building-environment interaction, and integrated design for sustainable and healthy buildings. Recent studies include the impact of wildfire smoke on air quality both outdoors and indoors, the optimal conditions for learning in indoor environments, including temperature and lighting, and the effects of temperature inside vehicles on driving performance and cognitive ability.

Generative AI Advances Architectural Design for Novice Designers, Showing Performance Gains with 36 Participants

Quantum Zeitgeist reported on new research from a team led by Shichao Liu, assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering. The team, including PhD students, explored how students’ use of generative AI in the architectural design process affected performance, individual confidence in creative ability, self-efficacy, and cognitive load.
