How to Change or Declare a Major/Minor or Concentration
Minor FAQs

Many of the responses below refer to the Undergraduate Course Catalog. Students should refer to the specific course catalog for their year of entry to WPI. For example, if you began at WPI in Fall of 2024, you would use the 2024-25 Undergraduate Course Catalog. All Course Catalogs can be found here

1.    Where can I find a list of minors that WPI offers?
You can find a list of WPI minors on the WPI Academics Website.

2.    How many credits are required for a minor?
A minor requires the completion of 2 units (18 credits) of thematically related activity (see the UG catalog for the specific requirements for each minor).

3.    How do I declare a minor?
Minors can be declared directly in Workday by following these instructions.

4.     How do I track my minor?
Your minor requirements are in your academic progress report in Workday. Since minor procedures vary by department, students should consult the Undergraduate catalog and/or contact the department of the minor directly for guidance on fulfilling the minor. Some departments will require a form to be filled out with guidance from a faculty member and submitted to the registrar’s office

5.    How many units/credits can be double counted for a minor?
One unit (9 credits of the required 18 credits) of a minor can be double counted toward another degree requirement. The other one unit (9 credits) cannot be double counted. Please note that courses in your free electives and/or unused courses on your Academic Progress Report are not considered double counted courses.

6.    Can I count any of my MQP credit towards a minor?
No, students are not allowed to use any portion of their MQP credit toward a minor.

7.    How can I confirm that I am only double counting one unit (9 credits) toward my minor?
You should review your Academic Progress Report in Workday to confirm that at least one unit of work toward your minor is listed in your free electives or unused courses area.

8.    Are courses that are in my free electives on my Academic Progress report considered double counted courses?
No, courses that are in your free electives on your Academic Progress report are not considered double counted courses for your minor.

9.    Can I complete more than one minor?
Yes, you can complete more than one minor as long as you are only double counting one unit (9 credits) of each minor towards any other degree requirement. No triple counting is permitted.

10.    I am a double major. Can I count the same course toward both my majors and my minor?
No; that would be considered triple counting which is not permitted.

11.    I am a BS/MS student. Can I count the same course towards my bachelor’s degree, my master’s degree, and my minor?
No; that would be considered triple counting which is not permitted.

12.    Can I create my own minor?
Yes, you can work with faculty members to create your own individually-designed minor (IDM). IDMs must be approved by the Committee on Academic Operations (CAO). Students can request the form needed to propose an individually-designed minor by contacting the Registrar’s Office at registrar@wpi.edu. Once you have filled out the form and obtained the required signatures, you should submit the form to the Registrar’s Office, who will present it to CAO for review. If/when the minor is approved, the Registrar’s Office will add the IDM to your records.  The minor will appear on your records as “Individually-Designed Minor”.

13.    Will my minor appear on my diploma?
No; only majors are listed on WPI diplomas. However, minors are listed on WPI transcripts.

14.    What if I have questions regarding how my minor courses are being allocated on my minor Academic Progress Report?
You should first consult with the academic department of your minor for guidance on which courses to take. You may also reach out to your Academic Support Advisor (listed under View My Support Network in Workday) to help you review your Academic Progress Report and ensure no more than 1 unit (9 credits) are double counting. If there are still issues with how the courses are being allocated on your minor Academic Progress Report, you should contact the Registrar’s Office by emailing them at registrar@wpi.edu. They will be able to review your minor for you and make any necessary updates to your APR.
