The dates and procedures for winter closing and end of year move out are important.  Students and their families should plan their departures according to information provided below.

The Residences Halls do not close for Fall break in October and Spring Break in March.

Winter Break Closing Procedures

In accordance with Section C subset 1 of the Housing and Dining contract, all Residence Halls with required meal plans close for the winter recess on December 14th @ Noon.

All other residents will be required to complete a Residential Services form to notify WPI of your winter recess plans.

If you are a winter athlete, please speak with your coach about accommodations.

When should you leave?

  • Within 24 hours of your last final.

When do the halls officially close?

  • At Noon on the Saturday following final exams/last day of classes.

Do all halls close for the Winter Break?

  • No, the following halls will remain open during the break as residents have kitchen facilities.
    • Ellsworth Apartments, Fuller Apartments, Faraday Hall, Salisbury Estates, East Hall, Elbridge House, Schussler House, Hackfeld House, and all Graduate Houses/Apartments.
  • Students living in these spaces are required to submit information that they will be staying over break, even for part of the break.
  • If in a hall that closes - you will be provided with information about options for staying if you need to.

What if I can’t get a ride or I have extenuating circumstances?

  • You can fill out a late stay request form (request link from your RA) and you will be notified quickly whether have permission to stay. Be prepared that you may be told you cannot stay and should make other arrangements. The cost to stay late is $35.00 a day.

When do the halls officially re-open?

  • At 9am on the Sunday prior to the first day of C Term classes.

Tasks to Complete Before You Leave for Winter Break

  • Staying Over Break?

    Be sure to complete the break stay form and receive approval for staying.

  • Items To Do
    • Unplug EVERYTHING - Student Refrigerators/Micro Fridge Rentals must be cleaned out and unplugged - Not WPI Fridges in apartments and houses!
    • Close/lock window(s)
    • Pull items away from heat sources
    • Close shades/drapes
    • Turn down thermostat to low setting - “like a 2”
    • Empty garbage/ remove perishables
    • Turn off lights/lock door
    • Return rental textbooks
    • Take home valuables/medications/IDs/passports/etc
    • Make sure to keep WPI key/ID in a safe place!!

What if I am graduating, working graduation or have another reason I need to stay?

Fill out the late stay request form (request link from your RA) no later than Wednesday, April 24.

    • Room cleaned and all personal belongings removed.
    • Close and lock windows. Leave shades open.
    • Thermostat turned off.
    • All trash removed from the room.
    • Student must leave the furniture in the room as they found it.
  • How Do I Check Out?

    Check Out Day

    • Halls officially close at Noon on the Thursday following final exams/last day of class.
    • Centralized check out stations in East Hall & Wedge:
      • Tuesday (Last Day of D Term Classes) from 3pm – 9pm
      • Wednesday from 9am – 9pm
      • Thursday from 9am – 12pm 

     

    On Tuesday (Last day of D Term classes) and Wednesday after 9pm, you may express checkout in Founders Hall basement (near Campus Police).

    If you need to check out before Tuesday (Last day of D Term classes) at 3pm, use Express Check Out. 

    If you do not check out during normal check out times, the EXPRESS CHECK OUT option is always available. Envelopes are available at our Express Check Out box across from Campus Police in Founders Hall.

    Residents from Faraday, East, Founders, Institute, Elbridge, Schussler, Salisbury Estates

    Wedge: UP THE HILL

    Residents from Morgan, Daniels, Riley, Messenger, Stoddard, Ellsworth, Fuller, Hackfeld, Trowbridge

Damage Billing Facts

  • If there is any damage in your room, suite, apartment, floor, or exterior of the hall, you may be charged.  Damage is considered anything beyond normal wear and tear, that is different in your room than was originally found at the beginning of the academic year.
  • If you have information on any damages that have occurred in common areas of your building, please contact Residential Services.   When we are unable to discern the individual responsible for the common area damage, residents of the floor/building will be charged.
  • Please be aware you will see these charges on your bill.
  • Each room will be inspected by Residential Services Professional Staff after the buildings are vacant.  If any damages are found during this inspection, you will be charged via your student account.
