Athletes of the Week: Veronica Nikolaki & Men's Swimming 800 Yard Relay Team

VERONICA NIKOLAKI – SWIMMING AND DIVING

Veronica Nikolaki of the swimming and diving team has been named as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 20.  Nikolaki became WPI’s first woman and first diver to earn NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving All-America honors by finishing eighth on the 1-meter board at the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, NC on March 17.  The senior from Athens, Greece totaled 403.15 points during her evening dives after an outstanding preliminary performance that saw her amass 417 points.  Nikolaki concluded her outstanding collegiate career Saturday with a 21st place showing in the 3-meter event.

The 800-yard freestyle relay from the swimming and diving team has been tabbed as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 20.  Senior Alex Powers (North Scituate, RI), sophomore David Smallwood (Bangor, ME), senior Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA), and junior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) collaborated to post a school record time of 6:41.24 enroute to All-American seventh-place showing at the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, NC.  The foursome also earned honorable mention All-America accolades in the 400-yard freestyle relay (13th place – 3:01.84) while Bauer took home a pair of individual honorable mention All-America honors in the 100-yard (9th place – 44.67) and 200-yard (tied for 9th – 1:38.59) freestyles.
