Professional Writing Major
Communication Knowledge Adds Value to Careers and to Life
Research has shown that technical experts who can effectively explain concepts and motivate peers gain recognition and advance more quickly in their chosen fields. The Professional Writing (PWR) program adds value to a WPI education by building communication skills, allowing graduates to make complex ideas accessible as scientists, engineers, managers, and policymakers.
Graduates with an interdisciplinary major or second major in Professional Writing are prime candidates to: continue their education in medical, technical, veterinary, law, or pharmacy school; pursue such core communication careers as web design, analytics, technical communication, and game design; or fast-track a career in their WPI technical, engineering, or science major.
In Professional Writing courses, students learn the societal dynamics of technology — how to explain, propose and sustain technical work — using cutting-edge media and technologies from analytics and “big data” like that used in genomics, to game theory and discourse analysis. This intentionally small, selective program enables highly-motivated students to work individually with advisors to design a plan of study that both fulfills the program requirements and suits their personal interests and aspirations.
