GRAD 2009: Annual Showcase of Graduate Research at WPI Set for April 1

The breadth and quality of the graduate research programs at WPI will be in the spotlight on April 1 at Graduate Research Achievement Day (GRAD) 2009, as graduate students share the results of their ongoing research projects in a poster-style symposium.

Research by more than 175 graduate students to be on display at GRAD 2009

What:

The breadth and quality of the graduate research programs at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) will be in the spotlight at Graduate Research Achievement Day (GRAD) 2009, as graduate students share the results of their ongoing research projects in a poster-style symposium. The annual event gives students the opportunity to present their research to peers, faculty members, and the community at large, and promotes the exchange of information and ideas across a wide variety of disciplines. Monetary awards and certificates will go to the top posters in the following categories: engineering; the sciences; and life sciences and bioengineering.

A broad range of research projects will be covered in more than 175 posters. A small sample of topics includes

  • technologies for locating first responders inside buildings
  • optimization of a robot actuator and controller design for neurosurgery intervention
  • remote storage and its security in cloud computing
  • delivery of stem cells to the heart
  • generation of ethanol and fusel alcohol from lingocellulosic material using yeast
  • head movement analysis for first-person games
  • standardization of health care delivery processes with electronic medical records systems
  • characterization of sulfur resistance in a hydrogen separation membrane
