i3: Investing in Ideas with Impact

i3: Investing in Ideas with Impact is a campus-wide competition encouraging graduate students to not only think like entrepreneurs, but to hone the presentation skills entrepreneurs need to convince others to invest in their ideas. Sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Dean of Graduate Studies, the event helps competitors consider how their ideas and innovations could become the foundation of new products, new commercially valuable processes, and even new companies. Students then distill their vision into a three-minute pitch that they can make without the aid of visuals.

How i3 Works

The i3 competition begins at the department or program level, with winners advancing to elimination rounds organized by the deans of Arts and Sciences, Foisie Business School, and Engineering. At the finale, which follows the finals of the Graduate Research Innovation Exchange (GRIE), a panel of distinguished judges (entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and business executives) evaluate the quality and perceived value of the finalists' ideas and the effectiveness and persuasiveness of their pitches.

The Prizes

Winners of the department/program and academic division competitions will receive commemorative certificates. At the finals, judges may award up to two cash prizes for best overall presentation based on a single set of criteria. All i3 finalists are eligible for the People's Choice awards in which attendees are able to vote for their favorite presentation.

How to Enter

All WPI master’s and PhD degree candidates engaged in research are eligible to enter. Students must enter the first-round competition held by their respective department or program.
