The Autonomous Laboratory

As the trend goes towards the automatisation and digitalisation of laboratory processes, intelligent means for experiment design, process control, and process monitoring are sought after. In the first part of the talk, I will present a computational approach to finding experimental setups that are as “cheap” as possible and, at the same time, will allow to identify all unknown parameters of a mathematical system model; a related method allows us to find those experiments that will distinguish best between competing models. In the second part, I will present the implementation of a self-tuning controller that is based on the model predictive control paradigm. The results show excellent self-tuning and improved reactor temperature control for EasyMax 102. Finally, in the third part, I will present affordable and simple means for automated non-invasive measurement of biomass concentrations during cultivation in shake flasks, specifically, the use of colour images taken with smartphone cameras to make predictions of biomass concentrations.
