Safety While Abroad

WPI is committed to the health, safety, and security of all students who participate in the Global Projects Program. The Interdisciplinary & Global Studies Division (IGSD) supports safety in all of our programs through a series of mandatory pre-departure orientations that address key issues related to health, safety, and security off-campus. We provide detailed logistics and safety information through our Going Global handbooks prepared for each site (students are encouraged to supplement these formal preparations with their own research about their planned project site), and we maintain a 24-hour emergency response service that is available to assist all students while they are off-campus.

A Commonsense Approach Can Help Ensure a Safe and Enjoyable Experience

A safe and successful off-campus experience does not just occur—it requires careful planning and preparation. While off-campus study can present unique challenges, careful risk management and diligent planning can result in a rewarding project experience.

In an ongoing commitment to the safety of our students, faculty and staff worldwide, WPI is pleased to announce a new relationship with International SOS (ISOS), the world’s leading medical and travel security assistance company. Students are covered by ISOS for all international travel through the Global Projects Program, and may also purchase additional coverage from ISOS for any personal travel. Participants in the GPP are also supported by a travel medical and security insurance policy. A summary of the policy and a document that outlines the services the ISOS will be provided to students prior to departure.
ISOS provides assistance services in the following categories:

  • Travel Assistance Services
  • Medical Assistance Services
  • Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Services
  • Security Evacuation Services
  • Worldwide Destination Intelligence

All Students traveling off campus to participate in a WPI program in the US are required to carry medical insurance that is valid at the program site for the entire length of the program. Please verify your coverage outside of Massachusetts with your insurance company.  You will be asked to provide your insurance information before departure. In the event that your primary US insurance does not cover you at your Project Center, you can look into purchasing a short-term health insurance plan. The following are a list of options you may consider (No WPI endorsement or recommendation is implied):

Good Neighbor Insurance’s HCC Life Short Term Medical Insurance Plan

IHC Health Solutions Short Term Medical Plan
