Safety While Abroad

If you are abroad and experiencing an emergency, please call International SOS on +1 215 – 942 – 8478 and/or call the Global Projects Program Duty Officer on +1 508-769- 0117.

If you need assistance, and it is not an emergency, please email and we will respond to your needs as soon as possible.

WPI encourages its students to pursue academic opportunities around the world. While risk is inherent in all travel, and risk cannot be eliminated, we firmly believe that the risks can be significantly reduced when faculty, staff, students, parents, and the university partners work together.

WPI sees the safety and security of its students as a top priority. The Global Projects Program supports safety in all of our programs through a series of mandatory pre-departure orientations that address key issues related to health, safety, and security off-campus. We provide WPI travelers with the resources and information they need to prepare effectively for travel off campus and we serve as a first response in the event of an international emergency.

A Commonsense Approach Can Help Ensure a Safe and Enjoyable Experience

A safe and successful travel experience does not just occur - it requires careful planning and preparation. While off-campus study can present unique challenges, careful risk management can result in a rewarding project experience.

In an ongoing commitment to the safety of our students worldwide, WPI is pleased to announce a new relationship with International SOS (ISOS), the world’s leading medical and travel security assistance company. Students are covered by ISOS for all international travel through the Global Projects Program (GPP), and may also purchase additional coverage from ISOS for any personal travel. Participants in the GPP are also supported by a travel medical and security insurance policy. A summary of the policy and a document that outlines the services the ISOS will be provided to students prior to departure.
ISOS provides assistance services in the following categories:

  • Travel Assistance Services
  • Medical Assistance Services
  • Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Services
  • Security Evacuation Services
  • Worldwide Destination Intelligence
