Required Housing for First-Year Students

At WPI, residential life begins in our residence halls. On-campus housing is required for all full-time, first year students.   WPI works hard to make sure your experience is a good one. It won't be exactly like home, though in some ways it will be even better.

Research shows nation-wide that living on campus in the first year of college can positively impact a student's ability to make connections with other students, take advantage of academic resources, and become involved in campus life.  Additionally, students who live on campus in their first & second year graduate at a higher rate than those who do not.

Housing Selection

Your access to the housing selection portal will be available when you receive your WPI credentials. Housing selection will take place in mid-July. You can search for roommates by using the Class of 2023 Facebook page or the Residential Services SLACK channel. When you receive your housing placement confirmation you will be informed of the name and email address of your roommate(s) before arriving on campus for the start of the academic year. You are encouraged to contact your roommate(s) prior to arriving on campus, giving you the opportunity to decide who will bring such items as TVs or refrigerators.

Step 1: Sign Up for Housing Selection

APPLICATION DEADLINE JUNE 15. 

  • Login to the StarRez Portal
  • On the top of the page click on "Student Housing Application" 
  • Select Academic Housing Application 2019-2020
  • Complete all sections on the application.  

 

Step 2: Sign Up for a Meal Plan

APPLICATION DEADLINE JUNE 15. 

  • Login to the StarRez Portal
  • On the top of the page click on "Student Housing Application" 
  • Select Academic Meal Plan Application 2019-2020
  • Complete all sections on the application.  

 

Step 3: Sign Up for a Group

Groups signups will take place concurrently with the signup process – DEADLINE JUNE 15.

  • Login to the StarRez Portal
  • On the top of the page click on "Student Housing Application"
  • Select Academic Housing Application 2019-2020.
  • From here you will now see the option to "Create a Group" and "Manage a Group" available to you.
  • With your group determine who will be your Group Leader, this person is the one that will select housing for the entire group during housing selection.
  • Group leaders should request members of the group to join them or share the group name and password for group members to request to join the group.
  • Group members need to log in to the system and accept the invite from their group leader/join the group.
  • When your group is fully formed with all group members accepting, the group leader needs to log into the system and click "verify group".

 

Everyone must form a group to participate, even if you are trying for a stand-alone single room.

  • Group sizes range from 5 students down to 1 student.
  • Groups of 5 will choose multiple bedrooms within a suite
  • Groups of 4 will choose multiple bedrooms within a suite or a quad size bedroom
  • Groups of 3, 2, and 1 will choose into the same bedroom in a suite or building
  • Group Size does not equal room size. 
  • When forming a group you should be knowledgeable about the types of spaces that are available for each group size. 
  • Please refer to the building pages above for photos/videos/descriptions of buildings. 

 

Step 4: Receive your Housing Selection Day and Time

Group leaders will be emailed the housing selection time June 28th.

  • Housing selection will take place July 8 – 19
  • Times will be randomly assigned
  • Days will be by group size with the larger groups selecting earlier in the week.

 

Step 5: Select Housing

The group leader will Login to the StarRez Portal to select housing.

  • More information will be sent to the group leader with the selection time
  • All students will receive access to floor plans and available spaces

 

Step 6: Confirm Housing

  • Login to the StarRez Portal - If you are not the leader of your group, once your group leader has selected housing may confirm your housing assignment location
  • If you do not confirm your housing assignment, but your group leader selected housing for you on your behalf, you are still bound by your housing contract. 
 

Policies and Contracts

Before completing the Housing Application, please ensure that you have read and agreed to the Room Assignments and Policies Contracts. When accepting a room assignment, you will sign a Housing and Food Service contract requiring you to live on campus for the entire academic year.

Resident Advisors

Resident Advisors, or RAs, are responsible for residents in a particular section or floor of a residence hall––and are a great resource for first-year students. They contribute a great deal to the residential living experience at WPI, assisting with social or personal concerns, answering questions about the campus, explaining and enforcing WPI policies, responding to emergency situations, submitting work order requests, and are available when help is needed for any reason.
